"Education, Training and Sustainability: Conditions for success in a changing world"
![]() |
Angel Gurría, Secretary-General, Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development (OECD)
"Education and training systems must increase and specifically broaden knowledge and aware¬ness of sustainable development. Part of that effort should be teaching people about political processes, so they can be assured that their efforts and commitment to new ideas can have a positive effect on sustainable development."
Christine Ockrent, Executive Director, Société de l’audiovisuel extérieur de la France
"This gap between our behaviour, our opinions, the emotions we feel, and the individualism, fragmentation, even tribalization of behaviour increasingly present in contemporary society, is a phenomenon both carried and strengthened by information technologies."
Gérard Mestrallet, Chairman and CEO of GDF SUEZ
"Companies can and must be responsible, and commit themselves wholeheartedly to the path of sustainable development. Not only is this their obligation towards the societies that permit them to exist, but it is also in their own interest, not only in the long term but also in the short term."
Michèle S. Jean, President, Canadian Commission for UNESCO
"Too much rampant capitalism—capitalism that does not care about human resources but only about making a profit—pervades and creates havoc in many countries. This has to change and there is a movement, although too slow, in that direction. More large corporations are getting involved in programs based on equity, solidarity and responsibility."
Donald Kaberuka, President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB)
"It is those partnerships that will allow poor countries to access technologies that enable adaptation to climate changes, and produce clean energy to fuel the economic growth necessary for poverty eradication—surely the main struggle for mankind in this century."

Children and Poverty: Challenges and Solutions
![]() |
Taking action early in a child’s development is essential. Stimulating their sense of belonging and their capacity to learn and adapt to society, promoting a healthy lifestyle: these are key ingredients for ensuring they get a good start in school and do not drop out. The articles in this book plot various courses of action to combat the progression of poverty, laying out the viewpoints of internationally renowned experts on this issue, illustrating the importance of early intervention in childhood development.
We have an obligation as a society to invest in the development of our children. The economic fallout is far from negligible, since such programs help alleviate pressure on other systems, such as the public education system, and reduce the number of costly treatments. Studies have shown that a one-dollar investment in early childhood development will yield seven to seventeen dollars in savings over the long term.
By investing in development programs for our children we will make a contribution to the long-term progress of individuals and, as a result, to society.
